Share Week 8: Fresh List

Daytime and evening temps are starting to cool which is good news for some vegetables but not such a welcome change for other veggies. Kale, greens, root vegetables, vegetables in the cabbage and onion family all love the cooler temps. We were forced to harvest half of our onion crop already due to soggy soil but the lovely vidalias and white onions are resting in the cold cellar and will be be featured in the share in the coming weeks. Warm weather crops like cucumbers are done for the season. Tomatoes are on the downturn but still plentiful on the vines. tomatoes prefer temps north of 50deg so these cool nights have put a bit of a cramp in their style. Despite the cool temps though, it's still it's best to keep the tomatoes on the vines until they're ready for the share. Once plucked from the vine, it's a short window of freshness for a tomato. The tomatoes in our share are picked a day or 2 before the share delivery and no more. Vegetables in this weeks share include: Beets (Freiert Farms), Eggplant (Freiert Farms), Beefsteak Tomato, San Marzano Tomato, Banana Pepper, Jalapeno Pepper, Poblano Pepper, Pepper, Green Bell Pepper, Basil, Curly Blue Ridge Kale
